Environmental issues have been daunting Mumbai at every other occasion. Moreover each year the next day after Ganpati Visarjan we come across the horrifying sight of beaches after the POP mixes with the sea water. Overcoming this issue has been a major concern for every Mumbaikar and acting on the same lines is one such mandal in Girgaum.
Kuldaldeshkar Niwas Sarvajanik Ganehotsav Mandal in Girgaum is all set to implement the “Go Green Initiative” this year. Right from the Ganesh murti to all the decoration items which will be used this year would be of eco-friendly materials. The eight foot idol which was bought on Saturday to the colony is made up of hard fibre and colouring is done with the help of organic colours. The mandal spent the highest amount on the murti this year as compared to past several years. Another unique action plan they have taken up is that they wouldn’t be immersing the Ganesh murti in water this year. The idea is to take the Ganpati idol to the beach like it has been happening every year and to spill some water at the murti’s feet in order not to violate the tradition that has been followed by everyone for years now. The idol would be kept in the colony premises in a permanent pandal.
People concerned with the idea of “going green” this year state that the main motive to recycle the Ganesh idol is to do a little from their side for the environment and so also reduce the effects of environmental hazards like global warming. I am sure that all the initiators would be truly blessed by Lord Ganesh and so also a message would reach to other mandals who would soon start acting on similar lines.
